Artist studios are very personal spaces. On the one hand, they are the place where we expect significant things to be created; yet they are also workplaces, where the maker spends time, with unfinished work in progress and materials all around and little regard for presentation. It’s an unequal balance of expectations for outsiders.

I had the very great privilege to photograph the studios of Peter Beard, the renowned UK ceramicist. Not to make them appear perfect spaces, but to record them as they actually are, in progress, unfinished, a moment in time. Time is important to Peter in his work, both in the allusions to natural time in his forms and finishes, but also in the process of making. His studios are the embodiment of this process, of the stages of refinement over months. Despite appearances, there is order here.

This was one of those commissions that was an uncomplicated pleasure, from genial host, location and to subject!
